Neglected Tropical Diseases are a group of tropical infections which are especially endemic in low-income populations in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. These diseases infect more than one billion people in the world and are responsible for over half a million deaths annually. Research on these was significantly lower (measured by the number of published papers) than for other diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, with less afflicted people.
