It turns out the dangers of nuclear energy may be severely overstated. From 1971-2009, it is estimated that 5000 died from nuclear energy. It is also estimated that 1.8 million deaths were prevented by nuclear energy, largely due to the lack of pollutants in the nuclear cycle that would otherwise cause conditions such as cancer.
