Nearly a fifth of Americans suffer from some sort of mental illness (e.g. depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia). Of these 42.5 million people, 9.3 million suffer from a serious mental illness. This means that the illness affects their day to day functioning (e.g. going to work).
