This chart shows the great decline of waterborne illnesses like typhoid and malaria in the past century. Contagious diseases that were once common are rare and cause far fewer deaths. That's why, when a small outbreak of measles makes national news, it's actually a testament to the human progress we have made in eradicating disease.
