When it comes to the concept of racial identity, Americans are largely divided over the issue. When taking the public as a whole, approximately half of the public view their racial identity as at least somewhat important. There are, however, significant differences between different racial groups; seven in ten African Americans view their racial identity as very important while only 16% of whites say the same.
