American supporters of the death penalty are largely in agreement that execution is morally justified in response to very serious crimes. Perhaps unexpectedly is that a majority of the people that support the death penalty (itself a majority of the total American population) recognize that there is risk that innocent people will be executed. Moreover, nearly half believe the death penalty is not a crime deterrent. Where exactly is the appeal, then, for supporting such a system?
