Major League Soccer has seen unprecedented social media growth over the last couple years. Compared to the most recent five-day debut windows for the major sports: MLB saw a 23 percent decrease, NBA was down 19 percent, NFL was unchanged, and the NHL saw a 7 percent increase. Although the huge growth is a positive sign for MLS, they still have a lot of work to do. The average team's social chatter was only equal to 5% of the average NFL team's social chatter for the first five days of the season.
The MLS is certainly overshadowed by the traditional Big 4, but this year's acquisition of several big names from the European leagues is a promising sign that soccer's best years in the United States are yet to come.
