Over the course of 50 years, the makeup of single mothers in the U.S. has drastically changed. The trend has of single motherhood has shifted from mostly previously married women, to an almost equal distribution between previously married single mothers and single moms who have never been married. Does this signal a decline in previously negative societal attitudes toward unwed mothers? Perhaps more women are eschewing the expectation that one has to wait for the "right one" to marry too? The shift is likely a combination of these and other factors.
