Amount of genetically-modified crops grown globally, in million hectacres

In 2012, genetically-engineered crop hectarage reached 170 million hectares-- a 100-fold increase since being commercialized in 1996. 17.3 million farmers grew biotech crops last year, with over 90% resource-poor farmers in developing countries. The money saved on insecticides and the decreased risk greatly incentivize these farmers to produce genetically-altered crops. 20 of 28 countries planting biotech crops are developing countries.
