While the United States continues its significant lead in genetically-modified crop production, with 69.5 million hectares, the growth rate of biotech crops in Second World nations grew 3x faster than in industrial countries. 2012 marks the first year developing nations grew a majority of global biotech crops, 52%. Brazil led this growth, increasing production 21% from 2011.
