Perennially tense relations between Japan and China have drastically worsened in recent years over conflicting territorial claims to a string of uninhabited islands. There has been a near 300% increase in the scrambling of Japanese fighters against so-called Chinese infringements of Japanese sovereignty. Further exacerbating tensions, is the growing tendency to embrace aspects of Japan's past militarism by political elites.
