The average cost of cigarettes in the U.S. has increased 1379% in just 40 years. In 1970, the average cost per pack was $0.38 and the average tax per pack was $0.18. By 2011, the average cost was $5.62 and the average tax was $2.35. Average tax as a percentage of average cost has actually decreased from 47.4% to 41.8%.
