The number of Chapter 9 bankruptcy filings has been sporadic over the last three decades. According to PEW, there were 262 municipal bankruptcies from 1980 to November 2011. There was a sharp rise in bankruptcy filings from 1980 to 1987, when the number of bankruptcies peaked at 20 in 1987. In recent years, there hasn't been a well-defined trend.
