As the Syrian conflict has escalated from small-scale rebellion to full out civil war, the nongovernment casualty rate has exponentially risen, from an average of 480 deaths per month in 2011, to 3165 in 2012. 82% of nongovernment fatalities, or 38,449 of the 46842 killed, have been non-fighting civilians.
