"Gross Federal Debt" is the total debt owed by the United States federal government. And from this bar chart, it is evident that the United States is in serious debt. As each year goes by, the federal debt increases and is projected to increase in the years to come as well.

While the United States' debt is undoubtedly a serious concern, I would be interested to know whether these values represent real or nominal dollars. Since inflation steady decreases the value of the dollar, the gross debt might not be the most accurate indicator of how deep in the red we actually are.
