In 1983 Hawa Abdi, one of Somalia's first women doctors, opened a one-room clinic near Mogadishu. Her plan was to serve poor Somali women. Soon she was seeing a hundred patients a day. Eight years later, with a civil war raging, Dr. Abdi expanded her clinic to a 400-bed hospital. By 2010 it was a full-scale refugee camp, serving 9,000.
