Canadian federal spending fell to 15.1 percent of GDP in 2013 and is projected to decline to 14.0 percent by 2019. Meanwhile, U.S. federal spending was 20.8 percent of GDP and is expected to rise to 21.4 percent by 2019. Federal debt as a share of GDP is 74 percent this year—more than twice the Canadian level of 33 percent.
