The U.S. is relying more on natural gas and less on coal to generate electricity. In 2005, 49.6% of electricity was generated using coal and 18.8% was generated using natural gas. In 2012, however, only 37.4% of electricity was generated using coal while 30.4% was generated using natural gas.
